Distributed Ray Tracing of Mirages

چکیده

To further increase the realism of ray tracing, we take the idea of distributed ray tracing and add on to it mirage rendering. Mirages are seen quite often in our daily lives, and in order to make computer generated images look as realistic as possible, it is necessary to add things, such as mirage rendering, that are seen in the natural world. Mirages are caused by light passing from colder air to warmer air. When this happens, the light bends in relation to the temperature gradient [Wikipedia 2007]. Mirages can be most often found on roadways and on the hoods of cars, looking somewhat like a liquid. In this paper, mirage rendering will be implemented using a technique described by Berger, Trout, and Levit wherein the parabolic equation that mirages adhere to is approximated using a multilayered box capable of internal reflectance and refraction [1990]. Mirages with atmospheric gravity waves.

The temperature inversions that produce superior mirages are capable of supporting gravity (buoyancy) waves of very low frequency and long wavelength. This paper describes the optics of single mode gravity waves that propagate in a four-layer atmosphere. Images calculated by ray tracing show that (1) relatively short waves add a fine structure to the basic static mirage, and (2) long waves prod...

Global Illumination in Inhomogeneous Media Based on Curved Photon Mapping

This paper deals with representing several of the phenomena that occur when light travels a curved path through inhomogeneous media, such as the well-known mirages. Traditional curved ray tracing presents several problems which have not been efficiently solved yet. We present here our approach based both on curved ray tracing and photon mapping, introducing the concept of curved photon mapping.

Novaya Zemlya effect and sunsets.

Systematics of the Novaya Zemlya (NZ) effect are discussed in the context of sunsets. We distinguish full mirages, exhibiting oscillatory light paths and their onsets, the subcritical mirages. Ray-tracing examples and sequences of solar images are shown. We discuss two historical observations by Fridtjof Nansen and by Vivian Fuchs, and we report a recent South Pole observation of the NZ effect ...

Refraction of swell by surface currents

Using recordings of swell from pitch-and-roll buoys, we have reproduced the classic observations of long-range surface wave propagation originally made by Munk et al. (1963) using a triangular array of bottom pressure measurements. In the modern data, the direction of the incoming swell fluctuates by about ±10 ◦ on a time scale of one hour. But if the incoming direction is averaged over the dur...

Interactive Rendering of Non-Constant, Refractive Media Using the Ray Equations of Gradient-Index Optics

Existing algorithms can efficiently render refractive objects of constant refractive index. For a medium with a continuously varying index of refraction, most algorithms use the ray equation of geometric optics to compute piecewise-linear approximations of the non-linear rays. By assuming a constant refractive index within each tracing step, these methods often need a large number of small step...
